Rookie Defensive Tackle Issues Apology to Brian After Arriving an Hour Late to Cowboys Training Camp

After being called out by offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer for arriving late on Day 1 of Cowboys Training Camp, rookie defensive lineman Tommy Akingbesote has spoken out—and he’s owning his mistake.

“I messed up,” Akingbesote told reporters after Day 2. “I let my coaches down, and I let myself down. That’s not the tone I want to set here.”

The fourth-round pick admitted to showing up nearly an hour late to the opening day, a moment that quickly became a talking point throughout the locker room. Schottenheimer didn’t mince words during practice, delivering a sharp message about accountability and professionalism.

Now, Akingbesote is looking to bounce back.

“I’ve already apologized to Coach Schotty and my teammates,” he said. “That’s not who I am. I’m here to work, and I’m here to earn it.”

Veterans on the defense, including Micah Parsons and Osa Odighizuwa, reportedly pulled Akingbesote aside after the incident to deliver advice—and a reality check. The message was clear: your name means nothing if your preparation doesn’t match it.

The rookie has since stayed late after practice, doing extra sled work and film study. Coaches say they’ve noticed a shift in his focus—and that the situation, while disappointing, could end up being a turning point for his rookie year.

In Dallas, first impressions matter. And while Akingbesote’s started off on the wrong foot, his willingness to take responsibility might just earn him a second chance.

As Schottenheimer put it after Day 2:

“He owned it. Now let’s see if he grows from it.”
