Philadelphia Eagles Begin Purge - To Make Way for Stars.

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia Eagles' bye week just began after two straight wins, but the front office wasted no time making tough decisions. Kicking off the break, the team surprisingly released veteran Cornerback Parry Nickerson, a small but significant move sparking widespread speculation.

From Stopgap Solution to Roster Casualty?

Nickerson, 31, started the 2025 season on the practice squad but was elevated to the 53-man roster late last month when Jakorian Bennett landed on injured reserve. He appeared in the last five games, playing predominantly on special teams (60 snaps) with only 12 defensive snaps. In Sunday's win over the Giants, he logged just eight snaps on each unit.

Cutting Nickerson immediately opens up at least one valuable spot on the 53-man roster. The move comes at a perfect time as the Eagles hope to welcome back key players after the bye.

Making Way for Returning Stars or Prepping for a Blockbuster?

Most likely, this open spot is being prepped for the return of one of three names: the legendary Brandon Graham (who just came out of retirement), Nolan Smith, or Jakorian Bennett himself (whose 21-day practice window recently opened). Their return would significantly bolster the defensive depth.

However, the timing of this cut – right before next Tuesday’s Trade Deadline – cannot be ignored. The Eagles are rumored to be in the market for another high-caliber Cornerback or Pass Rusher to solidify their push for back-to-back Super Bowl titles. Could releasing Nickerson be the precursor to a major trade acquisition?

"No room for placeholders. The Eagles are cleaning house for the Super Bowl run, and tough decisions are being made." This decision highlights the necessary ruthlessness of a championship-contending team. While Nickerson could potentially return to the practice squad (the Eagles also cut DE Titus Leo from the taxi squad), it's clear Philadelphia is prioritizing maximizing their roster potential for the most critical part of the season.

Steelers Strengthen Secondary by Acquiring Veteran Safety from Patriots After Back-to-Back Losses
The Pittsburgh Steelers are wasting no time addressing their defensive struggles. Following two straight losses — including a 35–25 defeat to the Green Bay Packers — the team has officially traded for veteran safety from the New England Patriots. According to ESPN, the Steelers sent a sixth-round pick and a seventh-round swap to the Patriots in exchange for Dugger, who was selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. The move comes as Pittsburgh places safety DeShon Elliott on injured reserve with a hyperextended knee suffered in Sunday’s loss. Kyle Dugger, 28, brings experience and versatility to a secondary that’s been inconsistent in recent weeks. He started 69 of 81 games for the Patriots and recorded over 400 total tackles, nine interceptions, and two defensive touchdowns. After signing a four-year, $58 million extension in 2024, Dugger had become one of New England’s defensive leaders before falling out of rotation under new head coach Mike Vrabel. That’s how I play the game. I can’t wait to get out there with T.J. Watt and Minkah and help this defense get back to Steelers football.” The Steelers’ secondary has been under fire after allowing 360 passing yards and three touchdowns to Jordan Love in Week 8. With Elliott sidelined and depth thin, Dugger’s arrival gives Pittsburgh an immediate upgrade in tackling, coverage, and leadership on the back end. Head coach Mike Tomlin said in a statement that Dugger’s addition represents the kind of mentality Pittsburgh needs down the stretch. “He’s smart, experienced, and plays with the physicality we value,” Tomlin said. Pittsburgh will look to rebound when they face the Indianapolis Colts in Week 9 — and for a team looking to rediscover its defensive identity, the arrival of Kyle Dugger could not have come at a better time.
