Panthers Head Coach Dave Canales Praises Saints QB: “I Didn’t Want Carolina to Lose, But We Just Couldn’t Stop Him”

Charlotte, North Carolina, November 9, 2025
Even in defeat, greatness must be acknowledged. Following the New Orleans Saints’ 17-7 win over the Carolina Panthers in Week 10 of the 2025 NFL season, all eyes turned to Tyler Shough, the rookie quarterback who put on a masterclass on the road — and earned heartfelt praise from Panthers head coach Dave Canales.

Known for his composure and straightforward honesty, Canales spoke candidly in his postgame press conference.

“I didn’t want Carolina to lose, not even a little,” Canales admitted. “But I’ve got to be honest — we just couldn’t stop Tyler Shough. His reads were sharp, his timing was perfect, and his confidence was something special. When a young quarterback plays like that, you tip your hat.”

⚜️ Tyler Shough’s breakout performance

The young quarterback completed 19 of 27 passes for 282 yards, 2 touchdowns, and no interceptions, posting a 118.4 passer rating — the best of his early career. His accuracy and control allowed the Saints to dictate the pace of the game from start to finish.

Canales, who prides himself on defensive discipline and preparation, acknowledged the challenge his defense faced all afternoon.

“We threw a lot at him,” Canales said. “Different looks, disguised pressure, cover rotations — and he handled it all. That’s not easy for a rookie. He earned this one.”

🏈 A leader in the making

While many expected the Saints to lean on their run game, Shough took command early, converting crucial third downs and leading two touchdown drives. His chemistry with Chris Olave and Michael Thomas was evident, and his pocket presence reflected the poise of a seasoned veteran.

After the game, Saints head coach Kellen Moore praised his young signal-caller.

“He’s got that spark,” Moore said. “He studies hard, trusts his teammates, and raises the energy around him. This is just the beginning.”

💬 Mutual respect across the field

Even Panthers players recognized Shough’s performance. Veteran safety Tyrann Mathieu commented after the game:

“When a head coach like Dave Canales gives you that kind of respect, it means you really earned it. Shough did something special today.”

🏆 MVP beyond question

There was no debate about who the MVP was. Tyler Shough led the Saints’ offense to 412 total yards, compared to 285 from Carolina, and maintained control for all four quarters.

In just his rookie season, Shough has already given Saints fans what they’ve longed for — belief in the future.

As Dave Canales summed it up perfectly:

“He didn’t just win a football game. He showed leadership, maturity, and heart. That’s what this league is all about.”
