The Green Bay Packers have made a surprising move, re-signing veteran linebacker De'Vondre Campbell to a team-friendly contract, sources told ESPN. The 31-year-old returns to bolster a defensive unit in need of leadership.
Campbell inked a one-year, $5 million deal, a bargain compared to his previous $21 million, three-year contract, reflecting his desire to prioritize staying in Green Bay. The agreement runs through 2026.
“I’m thrilled to be back where I belong,” Campbell said on the team’s official website. “This is home, and I’m ready to give my all.” His return adds veteran experience to a young linebacker corps.
Campbell had two standout seasons with the Packers from 2021-2022, earning First-Team All-Pro honors in 2021 with 141 tackles and two sacks (Pro-Football-Reference). He was released in March 2024 to save $10.5 million in cap space after injuries hampered his 2023 campaign.
The re-signing comes amid a challenging offseason for the Packers, including a season-ending injury to rookie Barryn Sorrell and controversies during Pride Month (ESPN). Campbell’s 2021 Defensive Player of the Year runner-up performance could stabilize the defense.
Fans on X are buzzing with excitement: “Campbell back for $5M? What a steal!” one user tweeted. Another added, “De’Vondre’s heart is with the Packers—love this move!” Cheesehead fans see this as a savvy addition.
GM Brian Gutekunst, with $22 million in cap space (Spotrac), praised the move. “De’Vondre brings veteran savvy and a winning mentality,” he said. The low-cost deal allows flexibility for future moves.
Campbell’s return pairs him with Rashan Gary and Kenny Clark, boosting a pass rush ranked 22nd in 2024. Can he help the Packers overcome hurdles and chase a Super Bowl in 2025? Stay tuned to ESPN for updates.
