The Pittsburgh Steelers are gearing up for their preseason curtain closer against the Carolina Panthers, with final roster decisions looming right after the matchup.

Carolina’s Week 2 clash with the Houston Texans gave fans a brief look at the starters — a departure from last summer’s approach. Bryce Young was under center for just seven snaps, hardly enough to form a clear picture, though flashes of promise and a few shaky moments both crept in. Chuba Hubbard was handed only two rushing attempts, never really given the chance to build rhythm — something he thrives on when given more volume.

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh heads into the finale still stung by a narrow 17-14 defeat to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a result that evened their preseason record at 1-1. With roster spots up for grabs, this last dress rehearsal could be make-or-break for several depth players fighting to secure their place.

Panthers head coach Dave Canales revealed some of his plans for this week's preseason finale.

Canales spoke with reporters after today's practice, and was asked which coaches were on play-calling duties for the first two preseason games. He said that offensive coordinator Brad Idzik was in charge of, yes, the offense while the defense was led by defensive passing game coordinator Jonathan Cooley in Week 1 and then by linebackers coach Pete Hansen in Week 2.

But that won't be the case against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night—as the usual play-callers, himself and defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, will take back the reins.

"Ejiro and I will call this game," Canales stated. "It may seem weird to people, 'You're not playing the starters, but you're calling it.' But, again, it's for he and I just to continue to find the sequence of winning a game, of striving, of making adjustments and kinda utilizing the new information that the guys have."

Canales, in addition, ruled out backup quarterback Andy Dalton—who is dealing with a muscle strain in his right arm. With starter Bryce Young also out, that'll leave the position to second-year passer Jack Plummer and the 2025 UFL Most Valuable Player Bryce Perkins, who was signed on Monday.
