Texans legend calls out replacement referee after Bills vs Texans
The Week 12 matchup between the Houston Texans and the Buffalo Bills sparked new controversy after legendary defensive end J. J. Watt publicly criticized the officiating crew, specifically replacement referee Roy Ellison, who stepped in after Adrian Hill exited due to a non contact injury.
Despite celebrating the Texans victory, Watt did not hesitate to call out what he believed were inconsistent and disruptive decisions by Ellison. Speaking on a live stream after the game, the Texans icon said:
“I am happy the Texans won. But I cannot deny that the replacement referee created chaos with several decisions that clearly benefited Houston. It made the game feel off.”

The shift in officiating occurred in the third quarter after Adrian Hill suddenly grabbed his leg and was carted off the field. Roy Ellison then took over. Within minutes, Bills fans and analysts began highlighting missed penalties against the Texans and questionable calls that went against Buffalo.
Watt, often recognized as the greatest player in Texans history, went further:
“I love this team. But I also love fairness. Some moments in that game were managed very poorly.”
His comments caused immediate shock waves across the NFL community. Bills fans praised Watt for honesty and integrity. Texans fans were divided, with some applauding his transparency and others wishing he had not spoken out after a hard fought win.
Analysts pointed out that Watt voiced concerns many observers shared. Ellison’s past, including a 2018 incident where he was disciplined for verbally confronting Bills player Jerry Hughes, only added fuel to the discussion.
The NFL has not yet responded publicly to the controversy, but Watt’s comments have intensified pressure on the league to reevaluate the officiating performance in the game.
