Steelers Unexpectedly Release QB to Clear the Way for Will Howard’s Development
The Pittsburgh Steelers made a surprising roster move this week, parting ways with a quarterback from their practice squad to focus on the future of their young talent.
After their heartbreaking 33–31 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 7, the Steelers are recalibrating ahead of Sunday’s matchup with the Green Bay Packers. While fans expected adjustments on the defensive side, the first major change came at quarterback — a position that has seen plenty of headlines in Pittsburgh this season.
According to multiple reports, the Steelers have released quarterback Logan Woodside from the practice squad.
Woodside, a 30-year-old veteran and former seventh-round pick by the Bengals in 2018, has bounced between several NFL teams throughout his career, including stints with the Titans, Falcons, and even the now-defunct AAF. Despite his years in the league, he never threw a regular-season pass, though he logged 14 rushing attempts for 10 yards.
His departure, however, is seen by many as a strategic move — one designed to give rookie Will Howard more opportunities to develop under head coach Mike Tomlin’s system. Howard, the Steelers’ sixth-round draft pick out of Kansas State, has been recovering from a minor injury but is expected to return soon, potentially joining the active roster in coming weeks.
With Aaron Rodgers locked in as the starter and Mason Rudolph as backup, the team’s focus now appears to be preparing Howard for long-term growth and future leadership.
Speaking on the decision, Mike Tomlin gave his signature straightforward response:
“We make moves with purpose. Every roster decision we make is about growth — not comfort. Will’s got the tools, and now he’ll get the time. That’s how we build here.”
The Steelers are now entering Week 8 with Rodgers and Rudolph leading the offense, while fans keep a close eye on Will Howard’s development. For a franchise built on patience and preparation, this could be the first step in grooming their next potential starter.
