Steelers to Bring Key RB Back vs Vikings After Injury Scare

The Pittsburgh Steelers head into their Week 4 overseas matchup against the Minnesota Vikings with both optimism and concern surrounding their backfield. After a shaky offensive start to the season, all eyes are on who will line up in the run game at Croke Park.
Reports earlier in the week created uncertainty as one of Pittsburgh’s most important offensive weapons was limited in practice. With the team preparing to face one of the league’s toughest defenses, speculation grew about whether he would be available on Sunday.
The Steelers also elevated another running back from the practice squad, signaling that depth could be tested in Ireland. Fans immediately began questioning if this move was insurance in case the lead back couldn’t go.
That lead back is Jaylen Warren, who had been dealing with a knee injury and was listed as questionable on the final injury report. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Warren is expected to play against Minnesota despite the issue.
Warren has been Pittsburgh’s most productive skill position player so far this season, leading the team in both receiving yards (142 on 11 catches) and rushing yards (132 with one touchdown on 43 attempts). His versatility has made him essential in an offense still searching for rhythm.
The Steelers’ ground game as a whole has struggled, averaging just 2.8 yards per carry, but Warren’s ability to contribute in both phases has kept drives alive. If his workload is limited, Kenneth Gainwell is the likeliest candidate to take on more touches after earning 16 carries and seven catches through three games. Trey Sermon, elevated again from the practice squad, could also see action.
The challenge ahead won’t be easy. Minnesota’s defense, coordinated by former Steelers assistant Brian Flores, is one of the best units in the league. However, the Vikings have shown some vulnerability on the ground, giving up 130 rushing yards per game. That could give Warren and the Steelers’ backfield a chance to make an impact in Dublin.
