The Pittsburgh Steelers’ trip to Dublin for their Week 4 game against the Minnesota Vikings turned frightening on Friday night when quarterback Skylar Thompson was reportedly robbed near Temple Bar in central Dublin.
According to local reports, the incident happened around 2:30 a.m. when Thompson was surrounded by a group of men. During the attack, his phone was stolen. Irish police have yet to confirm the details, as no formal complaint has been filed by Thompson, the Steelers, or the NFL.
Team spokesman Burt Lauten confirmed the organization was aware of the situation but declined further comment: “We are aware of a situation involving Skylar Thompson on Friday night in Dublin. We will have no further comment at this time as we are working with NFL security to gather more information regarding the incident.”
Thompson himself, clearly shaken, reportedly told teammates: "He held a knife to my back… I thought I’d never make it out alive.” His words underline just how terrifying the ordeal was, even though he managed to walk away without serious physical harm.
The NFLPA also issued a statement emphasizing player safety. “We are aware of the incident involving Skylar Thompson in Ireland and are relieved to know he is okay. The NFLPA is actively gathering more information and working to understand the full circumstances surrounding what took place. Our priority is the health and safety of our members, especially during international games, and we will continue to support Skylar in any way he needs.”
Police sources confirmed that a male in his 20s required some medical assistance in the Temple Bar area that night but did not need hospitalization. It remains unclear if the incident was directly related to Thompson’s account.
Following the ordeal, Steelers players were banned from going out in Dublin on Saturday night as a precaution. On the field, however, the team pulled together and secured a gritty 24-21 win over the Vikings at Croke Park.
