Steelers Eye Young QB Prospect to Replace Aaron Rodgers

With 40-year-old Aaron Rodgers now officially leading the Pittsburgh Steelers, the franchise appears to already be planning for what comes next. According to multiple NFL analysts, the Steelers have been linked to LaNorris Sellers, a rising sophomore quarterback at South Carolina, as a possible long-term successor to Rodgers.
Though Sellers is still early in his college career, his athletic profile, arm strength, and dual-threat skillset have drawn comparisons to quarterbacks like Anthony Richardson and Jalen Hurts — big-bodied passers with mobility and upside. For a franchise that hasn’t had a long-term QB plan since Ben Roethlisberger’s departure, Sellers represents a tantalizing option.
“He’s raw but powerful — a modern quarterback prototype,” one scout said. “Perfect to learn behind a veteran like Rodgers.”
🔹 Who Is LaNorris Sellers?
Sellers, standing at 6’3" and weighing around 240 pounds, is known for his aggressive running style and deep-ball potential. As a freshman at South Carolina, he saw limited action but showed flashes that caught the attention of scouts. His size-speed-arm combo is rare, and if he takes a leap in 2025, he could rapidly climb NFL Draft boards.
With Rodgers expected to play one or two more seasons, the Steelers are reportedly considering investing a Day 2 pick in 2026 on a quarterback who can be developed without immediate pressure.
“Rodgers gives you a win-now window. Sellers could give you 10 more years of flexibility,” noted an AFC executive.
🔹 A Strategic Succession Plan?
Rodgers’ arrival in Pittsburgh shocked many, but it also raised immediate questions: Who’s next? While Will Howard and Mason Rudolph are currently on the roster, neither is seen as a long-term franchise quarterback. Sellers, on the other hand, offers upside, youth, and time to grow in a stable system.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has a reputation for building tough, smart players — and mentoring young talent. Sellers could benefit greatly from Rodgers’ mentorship, much like Jordan Love did during his time with the Packers.
“Imagine Sellers sitting a year or two behind Rodgers, soaking in film study, footwork, pre-snap reads. That’s the dream scenario,” wrote Heavy.com.
🔹 What This Means for Steelers’ Future
If Pittsburgh does pursue Sellers or a similar QB prospect, it shows the front office is thinking beyond 2025. While Rodgers gives them a legitimate shot at a deep playoff run right now, the team doesn’t want to be left scrambling once he retires.
By identifying a young quarterback early, the Steelers could follow the Patrick Mahomes–Alex Smith model: bring in a veteran, groom the successor quietly, and transition without drama.
“This is about sustainability,” one insider said. “Rodgers is the present. Sellers might be the future.”
