Steelers Cut Veteran RB on the Spot After Training Camp Disappointment: “I’m Just Too Disappointed”

The Steelers’ Training Camp doesn’t leave room for excuses — and today, one veteran learned that the hard way.
During today’s padded session, a veteran running back struggled once again with execution. Coaches grew visibly frustrated, but it wasn’t until the offense stalled during back-to-back reps that head coach Mike Tomlin had seen enough.
He didn’t wait until the end of practice. He didn’t call a meeting.
“I’m just too disappointed,” Tomlin said bluntly.
“We’ve got a standard here. And he didn’t meet it.”
Witnesses say Tomlin approached the player mid-session, spoke directly and firmly, then told him to leave the field. Staff members quietly followed up with personnel action — and by the time practice ended, the move was already official.
This veteran had been signed to add experience and depth behind younger backs, but performance issues throughout the week — from missed assignments to poor effort in pass protection — left the staff frustrated.
It’s not often that a seasoned player gets released on the spot during camp. But in Pittsburgh, respect is earned every snap. And no one is immune to accountability — no matter the resume.
That running back?
Cordarrelle Patterson.
And for him, Training Camp 2025 in Pittsburgh ended the moment he let the standard slip.
