Steelers' Cameron Heyward Honored As A Top 3 Pittsburgh DL Legend

The Pittsburgh Steelers are a franchise built on tradition, grit, and continuous success. Throughout their history, they've been known for producing leaders who posses these traits, but also dominate on the field at every position. Recently, defensive lineman Cameron Heyward was honored by Steelers insider Mark Kaboly, who named him among the top three defensive linemen in team history.

During a recent appearance on 93.7 The Fan, Kaboly joined the show to discuss a variety of Steelers related topics. When the conversation turned to Steeler legends, they talked about the importance of playoff success in defining a player's legacy. However, Kaboly pushed back on that notion, saying he doesn’t necessarily agree. Kaboly shared his top picks of legendary defensive linemen, and notably included Heyward on his list.

Cam Heyward's Absence From OTAs Isn't a Problem Until It Is

"Other than Mean Joe [Greene], and I know Ernie Stautner is before me, I don't know who I am putting ahead of Cam Heyward," Kaboly said.

It’s important to clarify that this list focuses specifically on defensive linemen, so this list doesn't include players from other positions. The Steelers have produced legendary talent across the board, but each position demands unique skills and is judged by different standards.

What’s undeniable is the impact Heyward has had on the Steelers' organization. This offseason, he’s been a frequent topic of discussion, mainly because of his age. At 36, Heyward is considered older by NFL standards, especially given football's physical demands. While his on-field performance still mirrors that of a younger player, the reality is that his career could be winding down in the next few years. Heyward's contract ends following the 2026 season.

Heyward’s legacy is sure to impact the next generation of players. Off the field, he’s already a role model, having been consistently nominated for the prestigious Walter Payton Man of the Year Award and winning the league-wide honor in 2023. Each NFL team selects a player who exemplifies outstanding character and community service, and Heyward’s continuous involvement in giving back has made him a standout in that regard.

Within the team, Heyward has shared that he’s never afraid to be the loudest voice in the room, leading both on the field and in the locker room. He inspires his teammates while also holding them to a high standard, embodying the qualities of a true leader. His leadership has helped younger players and keeps a culture that can carry on long after he's gone.

The Steelers used their highly coveted first-round pick this year to select a defensive lineman many believe could become Heyward’s eventual successor. Derrick Harmon, who has openly said he models his game after Heyward, is both honored and excited for the chance to learn from someone he’s admired. Heyward has already taken a role in Harmon’s development, even revealing that he knew Harmon would be the pick before the draft announcement was made.

The Steelers Are Building For The Future

The Steelers have been incredibly active this offseason, and it's certainly not for nothing. They're trying the impossible of trying to stay competitive now, while also building for the future. It’s very tough to do, and while their moves look promising on paper, the real test will come once the season kicks off.

Heyward isn’t the only veteran on the team who is approaching the later stages of his career, as there are several other players also nearing the end of their playing days. With time running out for some of these players, the Steelers have no intention of simply giving up or tanking. Instead, their clear focus is on remaining competitive and fighting for wins.

The ultimate goal remains the same: to win games and compete at a high level. With recent playoff appearances ending quickly, fans want to see this new team make a deep run for playoff success.

Cowboys Legend Asks Out Of Dallas for One Last PLAYOFF Push, And Now He’s Joining A Playoff Contender You Didn’t See Coming
Cowboys Legend Asks Out Of Dallas for One Last PLAYOFF Push, And Now He’s Joining A Playoff Contender You Didn’t See Coming With the Chargers scrambling after major injuries in their backfield, Ezekiel Elliott just might have found his way back to an NFL opportunity. Dallas cut him last December, and through the first few weeks of the 2025 season, he’s still unsigned. But that could change fast. In LA, the situation has become dire: Najee Harris tore his Achilles in Week 3, and rookie Omarion Hampton now lands on injured reserve with an ankle injury from Week 5. Suddenly, the Chargers are down to Kimani Vidal and Hassan Haskins — both unproven as workhorse backs. To bolster depth, they even added Nyheim Hines to the practice squad, banking on his special teams value and prior familiarity with the organization. Here’s where Elliott’s name starts buzzing again. He once had a brief stint with the Chargers after leaving Dallas, so he’s not a stranger to their system — and he already has some rapport with head coach John Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman. In a run-heavy, downhill offense, his veteran instincts could still carry weight. He’s no longer the 25-carry workhorse of 2016, but he can still deliver in short-yardage, third-down, and red-zone situations. His field vision remains sharp, and he knows how to push forward through contact — skills that can turn a 2nd & 4 into a first down. For the Chargers, adding Elliott (likely to the practice squad) isn’t flashy, but it makes sense. It’s low risk with potential upside. With their top backs shelved and the offense scrambling for balance, a seasoned presence who can get those gritty 3–4 yards might be exactly what they’re missing. They’re not asking him to change the game — just keep them steady when every yard counts. And it seems the locker room is already on board. Chargers’ star quarterback Justin Herbert praised the addition, saying: “Competitors are always welcome at the Los Angeles Chargers. He’s picked things up pretty quickly since arriving, so it’s cool to have him around — and even cooler to see how seamlessly he’s fitting in with us.” That’s a strong endorsement from the face of the franchise — and a clear sign that the Bolts’ locker room believes Elliott still has something left in the tank.
