Born in Norway in 1942, Jan Stenerud came to the United States on a ski jumping scholarship. However, it was his powerful leg that would forever change the landscape of football. He joined the Kansas City Chiefs in 1967 and quickly transformed the kicking game with his unique soccer-style technique.

Over his remarkable 19-year career, Stenerud scored over 1,700 points—an extraordinary achievement for a kicker of his time. He played a key role in the Chiefs' victory at Super Bowl IV, contributing three field goals and a PAT to help secure a historic win over the Minnesota Vikings.

A Lasting Legacy with the Kansas City Chiefs

Jan Stenerud’s name will forever be etched in both NFL and Chiefs history. In 1991, he became the first kicker to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In 1994, he earned a spot on the NFL’s 75th Anniversary All-Time Team. The Chiefs retired his jersey number (#3) in recognition of his monumental contributions to the franchise.
