The Pittsburgh Steelers have announced they will cover the full cost of medical treatment for one of their most iconic Hall of Fame legends — a gesture that reflects the franchise’s enduring bond with the men who built its dynasty.
Team president Art Rooney II released a statement honoring the legendary wide receiver, calling him a “timeless symbol of grace, greatness, and Steeler pride.”
“This legend gave everything to our franchise — toughness, heart, and decades of pride,” Rooney said. “Now it’s our turn. Once you wear Black and gold, you’re family for life, and we’ll stand by you every step of the way.”
That statement was made for Lynn Swann, the Hall of Fame wide receiver whose artistry, athleticism, and poise transformed the way the game was played — and helped cement the Steelers’ 1970s dynasty as one of the greatest in NFL history.
From 1974 to 1982, Swann recorded 336 receptions for 5,462 yards and 51 touchdowns, adding 64 total TDs including playoffs. A master of the spectacular catch, his acrobatic body control turned deep passes into poetry in motion, redefining what a “big-play receiver” could be.
Swann was a four-time Super Bowl champion (IX, X, XIII, XIV), earning Super Bowl X MVP honors after torching the Dallas Cowboys for 161 yards on just 4 receptions, including one of the most iconic leaping catches in NFL history. His ability to rise — literally and figuratively — made him the heartbeat of the Steelers’ aerial attack during the Chuck Noll and Terry Bradshaw era.
His accolades are as staggering as his highlights: three Pro Bowls, three First-Team All-Pro selections, and a place on the NFL 1970s All-Decade Team. In 2001, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and his iconic No. 88 jersey was officially retired by the Steelers in 2002.
