Panthers WR Xavier Legette Scores First TD But Shocking Stat Emerges

The Carolina Panthers are beginning to show signs of life. After a gritty 27-24 win over the Miami Dolphins, they’re now eyeing a shot at the .500 mark with a home matchup against the surging Dallas Cowboys — the kind of momentum shift fans in Charlotte have been craving.
That victory didn’t just snap a skid — it also bumped the Panthers up from No. 28 to No. 24 in ESPN’s NFL Nation Power Rankings. A modest rise, but a meaningful one for a team starting to settle under head coach Dave Canales.
Still, not every storyline is trending upward. The spotlight remains on wide receiver Xavier Legette, the Panthers’ 2024 first-round pick.
Expectations were sky-high for Legette entering the season, especially as fellow rookie Tetairoa McMillan drew growing defensive attention. McMillan has been steady, if unspectacular.
Legette, however, has struggled to find rhythm.
After missing Weeks 3 and 4 with a hamstring injury, Legette finally broke through with his first touchdown against Miami. Yet, the broader picture remains concerning.
Through three games, he’s caught just six passes on 18 targets for 39 total yards — a catch rate of just 16.7%. Not what you expect from a first-rounder.
Context matters, though. Before Week 5, it was even worse: four catches for eight yards on 15 targets. Essentially non-existent production.
But against the Dolphins, there were finally flashes of what Legette could become. Targeted three times, he caught two — one for a seven-yard touchdown late in the second quarter, and another for 24 yards on a crucial fourth-quarter drive that helped seal the win.
Moments like that can reshape a player’s narrative. And there’s little doubt that head coach Dave Canales, quarterback Bryce Young, and offensive coordinator Brad Idzik hope this is the start of a turnaround.
Is it too soon to call it a breakout? Probably.
But for the first time this year, the box score shows more than just frustration. There’s promise — and a sense that if Legette can stay healthy and consistent, the talent might finally start showing up on Sundays.
The ability has always been there. Now comes the challenge of turning potential into production.
What’s your take on Legette’s first touchdown — the start of something big, or just a flicker of hope?
