Panthers Veteran A'Shawn Robinson Fuels Defensive Surge With Key Change

Once a question mark, A'Shawn Robinson has become a stabilizing force for a Panthers defense finally showing signs of a turnaround.
Notebook: Appreciating A'Shawn Robinson's contributions

If you’re looking for a quiet cornerstone to a defensive resurgence, A’Shawn Robinson is making a strong case for that title in Carolina.

A year ago, the Panthers’ defense was in disarray. They were statistically the worst in the NFL-giving up the most total yards, most rushing yards, and becoming part of an unwanted history lesson by being linked to a unit that allowed a league-record 534 points.

It was ugly, especially after losing Pro Bowl defensive lineman Derrick Brown in Week 1. One of their key offseason signings flopped.

The defensive front that was supposed to anchor the unit never got off the ground.

Fast-forward to 2024, the Panthers went back to the drawing board and added veteran A’Shawn Robinson to a three-year deal. And while his debut season in Charlotte didn’t exactly light up the tape-he tied for the team lead with 5.5 sacks and was third in total tackles (80), but PFF’s grading system wasn’t kind-a 54.6 mark that tied for the lowest of his career-it’s a whole different story this fall.

Now five weeks into the new season, Robinson has quietly been one of the pillars of a Panthers defense that’s flipped the script. He’s currently PFF’s 13th-ranked interior defensive lineman.

That’s not just a leap-it’s a statement. He’s sixth on the team in tackles with 18, has already notched a sack, and his performance on Sunday was exactly what Carolina needed from their 10-year vet: three tackles, including two behind the line of scrimmage, and a big sack on Tua Tagovailoa.

And here’s the kicker-after mustering just two sacks total over their first four games, the Panthers got to the quarterback three times in Sunday’s 27-24 comeback win over Miami. That uptick in pressure wasn’t random. It’s the result of a defensive line starting to find rhythm-and Robinson’s presence right in the heart of it can’t be overstated.

Ask defensive line coach Todd Wash, who praised Robinson’s role not just on the field, but off it. “When things get a little hairy on Sundays, he’s kind of the calming factor in our group,” Wash said.

He also pointed to Robinson’s leadership with the younger guys-showing them how to prepare, yes, but more importantly, how to take care of their bodies. “A’Shawn is very big into that stuff: nutrition and all that stuff that he does to play this long at that level.

He’s a great leader in our room all the way across the board.”

That leadership has translated into production. After getting gashed for 200 rushing yards in the season opener against Jacksonville, the Panthers' run defense has tightened up significantly-allowing just 84 yards per game on the ground over the last four contests.

This week, they held a high-octane Dolphins offense to only 248 total yards-the lowest Carolina's allowed all season.

So while head coach Dave Canales still has plenty to sort through as this Panthers team looks to find its footing overall, there’s no question what's happening on defense is trending in the right direction. And at the center of that improvement-literally and figuratively-is A’Shawn Robinson, the steady vet who’s helping turn a liability into a strength.

Owner David Tepper Admits He Lacks the Competence to Run Football Operations
Can you believe it? David Tepper, the "notorious" owner of the Carolina Panthers, has finally "confessed" a truth that team fans have been waiting for years: He doesn't have enough ability to handle everything himself! But hold on, this isn't a "disaster" – it's a "positive twist" that's saving the Panthers! Is Tepper "letting go" to let the team soar? Read now to uncover the "secret" behind this shocking statement! David Tepper, the billionaire famous for his "deep interference" style in the Carolina Panthers, has undergone an astonishing positive change in ownership. Instead of "micromanaging" every decision like before, Tepper is now less involved, allowing football operations to run independently under the guidance of experts. The result? The team is achieving stability and success beyond expectations, currently tied for first in the NFC South with potential to return to the playoffs after many "sinking" seasons! At the annual charity event Joy to the Carolinas on December 9, 2025, Tepper expressed confidence in the organization's new direction, implicitly admitting that he's not a "superhero" who can run everything himself. He said: "It's not bad at all. It's pretty good; it's all just building blocks, and we'll see where we go. We'll see what happens. We think, as I've said, Dave Canales, Dan Morgan, Brandt Tilis, and everyone in the organization, we're building something special in Carolina. And we've built it outside the community. We're building it on the field, so that's the overall picture. Hopefully, we can continue and have that for many years. That's what we're looking for." This "confession" is actually a wise acknowledgment: Tepper recognizes past mistakes when pushing for quick results, leading to a series of disastrous failures like continuous coach firings and poor draft choices. Now, he supports his professional picks – like head coach Dave Canales, general manager Dan Morgan, and vice president Brandt Tilis – without "interfering." Instead, Tepper focuses on infrastructure (like stadium upgrades) and community efforts, transforming himself from a "demanding boss" to a "silent supporter"! The Panthers are exceeding expectations at the end of the season, with solid gameplay and higher team spirit than ever. Optimism is spreading without the "must-win now" pressure – something that once caused the team to "break apart" under old Tepper. Fans, after years of "disappointment," now appreciate Tepper's enthusiasm and improved role as a true asset. Many fans on social media comment: "Finally, Tepper knows to 'let go' – and the Panthers are soaring because of it!" Some even predict that if this approach is maintained, the Panthers could become the "big boss" of the NFC South for many years to come. But is this "admission" a sign that Tepper is about to sell the team? Or just a "ploy" to appease fans? The Panthers ownership scandal is "hotter than ever" – and Tepper's words could change the team's history! What do you think, is Tepper really "incompetent" or is he "playing fair"? Comment now and follow for the next NFL "drama"!
