Panthers Head Coach Dave Canales Furious With Officials After Bills Loss — Calls on NFL to Investigate “Bias” Officiating Crew

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Tempers flared after the Carolina Panthers’ crushing 9–40 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, as head coach Dave Canales voiced his frustration with what he described as “one-sided officiating” throughout the game.
In the postgame press conference, Canales didn’t hold back. “I’ve coached long enough to know when things don’t look right,” he said. “We fought hard, but it felt like every key moment went against us — and not because of our play. The league needs to look into this.”
But the coach’s anger didn’t stop there. When asked about the officiating in the second half, Canales slammed his headset on the podium and snapped:
“I’m sick of this. Week after week, we battle, and when we finally get a big play, it’s taken away. How are we supposed to compete when the rules don’t apply evenly? This isn’t football — it’s politics on the field.”
The controversy centered on three key moments that swung momentum in Buffalo’s favor:
🔥 1️⃣ The overturned interception by Jaycee Horn
Early in the third quarter, with the Bills up 26–3, cornerback Jaycee Horn appeared to intercept a deep pass from Josh Allen to Khalil Shakir. Horn controlled the ball, landed with both feet, and rolled over before the ball hit the ground — but officials ruled it an incomplete catch.
Fans and analysts on X (formerly Twitter) immediately erupted, calling it “a clean interception” and accusing referees of protecting Buffalo. Canales was visibly furious on the sideline but opted not to challenge, saying later, “We didn’t get a clear enough replay in time, but I still believe that was our ball.”
🔥 2️⃣ The controversial “Tush Push” touchdown
In the second quarter, Buffalo extended their lead after a 1-yard QB sneak TD by Josh Allen, using the “Tush Push” play — where teammates shove the quarterback from behind. Panthers players and coaches claimed there was an illegal holding by Bills center Connor McGovern, yet no flag was thrown.
Social media lit up again, with some fans saying referees “turned a blind eye to help the favorite cover the spread.”
🔥 3️⃣ Ryan Fitzgerald’s costly missed field goal
While not an officiating error, kicker Ryan Fitzgerald’s 32-yard miss before halftime added to Carolina’s frustration. Fans questioned whether the pressure — and the team’s growing sense of injustice — played a role in the misfire.
After the game, Canales reportedly demanded the NFL review the officiating crew led by referee Alex Kemp, claiming several “missed or inconsistent calls” hurt Carolina’s chances to compete.
Panthers fans have since flooded social media with the hashtag #JusticeForCarolina, urging the league to ensure fairness and accountability.
As one fan put it: “We’re not asking for favors — just a fair game.”
The NFL has yet to comment on the situation.
