Panthers Head Coach Dave Canales Criticizes His Quarterback for Arriving Late to Practice Two Days in a Row. He’s been receiving plenty of praise, but that doesn’t mean he’s an exception.

Head coach Dave Canales has enforced stricter discipline across the team, and one rising star’s penalty for showing up late two straight days has caught everyone’s attention. He’s been receiving plenty of praise, but that doesn’t mean he’s an exception. The higher the expectations, the stricter the discipline. In Carolina, no one stands above the standard, not even the brightest star.

Inside the practice plan to keep Bryce Young on his toes

Charlotte, North Carolina, October 31, 2025
The atmosphere inside the Carolina Panthers training facility turned tense this week after head coach Dave Canales publicly called out quarterback Bryce Young for a lack of professionalism following two consecutive days of tardiness to team practice.

According to multiple reports from Panthers.com and ESPN, Young was late to both major practice sessions leading up to the team’s Week 9 matchup against the Green Bay Packers. Canales, known for his disciplined and accountability-driven approach, did not hide his disappointment.

“I love Bryce, but there’s no room for complacency here,” Canales said during Thursday’s press conference.
“He’s a special talent, but like everyone else, if you’re not on time, you’re held accountable. We don’t care if you’re a Heisman winner or the No. 1 pick. In Carolina, everyone follows the same standard.”

Canales added that while Bryce Young has been receiving a lot of praise lately, that does not mean he is exempt from the rules. In fact, the higher the expectations, the stronger the discipline must be. “The more the world praises you, the more you have to hold yourself accountable,” he said. “That’s how champions are built.”

According to reports, Bryce Young, who recently returned from an ankle injury and has played impressively with three touchdowns against the Cardinals while leading the team to a 3–3 record, was internally disciplined. His punishment included an additional 45 minutes of solo training and exclusion from the morning offensive meeting.

Some teammates were surprised by the firm action, but defensive star Derrick Brown called it the right move for the team.

“I think Coach is doing the right thing,” Brown said.
“Bryce is an amazing guy, but we’re trying to build a winning culture. That starts with being on time and staying disciplined.”

Young’s representatives declined to comment further, saying only that the quarterback is focused on recovery and preparing for next week.

However, multiple sources close to the team reported that Young personally met with Canales after practice to apologize to his teammates, showing maturity and accountability after the incident.

Analysts from NFL Network noted that this could be a key turning point for Young, who has been rebuilding his reputation after a rocky start to his NFL career.

“If Bryce responds the right way, this could prove he’s not just talented, he’s a real leader,” said insider Ian Rapoport.

The Panthers currently sit at 3–3 heading into a crucial stretch against the Packers, Titans, and Saints. All eyes are now on Bryce Young. Will the Carolina Reaper silence his critics with fiery play on the field, or struggle again under pressure?

One thing is certain: Dave Canales has made his message clear that in Carolina, discipline matters more than reputation.
