Fresh off their Super Bowl LIX triumph, the Philadelphia Eagles are fighting a new battle: not letting last year’s glory define this season. Head coach Nick Sirianni has been hammering home a simple but powerful message—success is fleeting, and the only way forward is to chase the next one.
Legendary UConn coach Geno Auriemma, who spoke with Sirianni this offseason, revealed the coach’s mindset: “The sense I got was that he was concerned, not in a bad way, but like most coaches are after your greatest success. That’s when things can slip away from you.” Sirianni wanted to learn how to sustain greatness, not just reach it once.
Sirianni has drawn a clear line for his team, reminding them constantly: “The victory lap is over. Prior accomplishments don’t guarantee future success.” In team meetings, he even used a metaphor of a car mirror—what’s behind you is visible, but what matters is the road ahead.
Players have echoed that message. Left tackle Jordan Mailata said bluntly: “As players, we have to move on. That is the only way we can improve this season. We can’t carry the baggage from last year—it’s just like a new relationship.”
Running back Saquon Barkley also embraced Sirianni’s words: “If you think you’re the reason we won the Super Bowl last year, you’re exactly right. If you think you’re the only reason, you’re exactly wrong. It’s going to take all of us.”
Even as banners, rings, and constant reminders of February’s victory surround them, the Eagles are intent on writing a new chapter. “We’re not the hunted,” Auriemma reminded Sirianni. “We’re on the hunt for another one.”
With leaders like Lane Johnson and emerging stars buying into the philosophy, Sirianni’s Eagles are aiming to prove that their Super Bowl wasn’t the end of the story—it was just the beginning.
