Former Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Fred Johnson was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars on Friday, just months after signing, due to a serious injury suffered during Organized Team Activities. The decision concludes his short tenure with the team.
Johnson, 28, reportedly tore his ACL during OTAs, sidelining him for the entire 2025 season, according to ESPN. The Jaguars, looking to strengthen their line, cut him to open a roster spot, per Spotrac.
Undrafted in 2019, Johnson joined the Eagles in 2022, playing 13 games in 2024, including one start, as a swing tackle. His versatility contributed to Philly’s top-ranked offensive line, per Pro-Football-Reference.com.
Released by the Eagles in March, Johnson signed a one-year deal with Jacksonville, aiming to compete for a starting role. The injury, however, derailed his comeback, leaving him a free agent, per CBS Philadelphia.
Fans on X expressed sympathy: “Tough break for Fred! Wish him a speedy recovery” (@PhillyFanatic). Others remarked: “Jags moved fast, but he’s a fighter” (@EaglesNation). Johnson’s tenacity earned him respect in Philly.
The Jaguars, rebuilding under Doug Pederson, shifted focus to younger linemen like Anton Harrison. Johnson’s $1.2 million deal was non-guaranteed, facilitating the release, per Spotrac.
Johnson’s future remains uncertain, with a year-long rehabilitation ahead. “Philly’s spirit is resilience,” he tweeted, promising a return. His Eagles tenure, including Super Bowl LIX, lives on, per PhillyVoice.
As the Jaguars prepare for their season opener, Johnson’s journey tests his determination. Will he make a comeback? Stay tuned to ESPN for updates on this resilient lineman’s next chapter!
