Former Bengals Star Rudi Johnson Tragically Passes Away at 45

NFL Community in Mourning

The NFL family is grieving today after the heartbreaking news that Rudi Johnson, former star running back of the Cincinnati Bengals, has passed away at the age of 45.

At the time of writing, the cause of death has not been disclosed. However, those close to Johnson shared that he had been battling mental health challenges and the possible long-term effects of CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy). Despite those struggles, Johnson continued to dedicate himself to helping others, remaining a role model both inside and outside football.

A Bengals Legend

Drafted in the 4th round of the 2001 NFL Draft (100th overall), Johnson wasn’t handed stardom—he earned it. Built with a stocky frame and known for his relentless north-south running style, he quickly became a fan favorite in Cincinnati.

Over seven seasons with the Bengals, Johnson amassed 5,742 rushing yards and became one of the most productive running backs in franchise history.

His best year came in 2005, when he rushed for a career-high 1,458 yards, setting a single-season franchise record that still stands today, while adding 12 touchdowns. That season, he powered Cincinnati to an 11-5 record and an AFC North title, bringing playoff football back to a city hungry for success.

Peak Years of Dominance

Between 2004 and 2006, Johnson was among the most reliable backs in the NFL, logging 36 rushing touchdowns in that span. He earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2004 and became the heartbeat of a Bengals offense built on grit and physicality.

In an AFC loaded with powerhouse defenses, Johnson’s consistency helped the Bengals transform into legitimate contenders.

Auburn Roots

Before his NFL career, Johnson made a name for himself at Auburn University, where he rushed for 1,567 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2000, earning SEC Player of the Year honors. His tough, no-nonsense running style in college foreshadowed the tone he would later set in the NFL.

More Than Just a Running Back

To Bengals fans, Johnson will be remembered not only for his numbers but for his attitude: always falling forward, setting the tone, and being the kind of player teammates loved to follow.

Off the field, Johnson was known for giving back, using his platform to inspire and support others even as he faced his own battles.

Farewell to a Warrior

Rudi Johnson’s name is etched in Bengals lore, but his impact extended far beyond the stat sheet. He was a difference-maker, a respected teammate, and a man whose toughness and resilience embodied the very spirit of football.

Rest in peace, Rudi. Your fight, passion, and legacy will never be forgotten.

Buffalo Bills Just Signed a Top-Remaining Free Agent CB to Save Their Secondary
The Buffalo Bills secondary has been pure chaos lately: Darius Slay refused to report, Ja’Marcus Ingram got poached by the Texans, and suddenly the depth chart looked thinner than ever. But GM Brandon Beane just pulled off a sneaky-smart move that flew completely under the radar… Late Tuesday afternoon, the Bills quietly signed one of the highest-rated cornerbacks still left on the open market to the practice squad — a 25-year-old former seventh-round pick with elite 4.45 speed and perfect slot-corner size (5’11”, 190 lbs). So… who is this mystery reinforcement? (Keep scrolling, we’ll reveal the name in a second) His 2025 journey has been a wild rollercoaster: Cut for good by the Las Vegas Raiders in April after bouncing on/off their practice squad all of 2024 Signed by Carolina in the summer → waived/injured → landed on IR Joined Baltimore in early August → survived most of camp but got released on final cutdown day (Aug 26) And now he’s officially belongs to the Buffalo Bills. Drumroll… the newest member of Bills Mafia is M.J. Devonshire — a name that, believe it or not, was still ranked inside the Top 30 available cornerback free agents this fall according to PFF, Bleacher Report, and multiple NFL insiders. Right now Buffalo’s active 53-man roster only has THREE true outside cornerbacks: Christian Benford Tre’Davious White Rookie Maxwell Hairston With a brutal late-season schedule and injuries always one snap away, bringing in a young, fast, draft-pedigree CB who can play both outside and in the slot is a no-brainer depth move. Is M.J. Devonshire the hidden gem who finally stabilizes the Bills’ secondary… or just another practice-squad body? One thing’s for sure: Bills Mafia just got a little faster.
