Eagles Turn To Rookie As Star Defender Faces Uncertain Injury Status

The Philadelphia Eagles are entering Week 7 with serious concerns on defense as breakout cornerback Quinyon Mitchell remains questionable for Sunday’s matchup against the Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Mitchell, who has quickly emerged as a foundational piece of the Eagles’ secondary, exited the 34–17 loss to the New York Giants due to a hamstring injury — the kind of setback that’s notoriously difficult for defensive backs relying on speed and sharp movement.

With limited recovery time, the Eagles face a choice between resting Mitchell for the long term or rushing him back to contain a Vikings receiver corps led by Justin Jefferson and supported by Jordan Addison, Adam Thielen, and Jalen Nailor — a dangerous quartet capable of punishing even minor coverage lapses.

If Mitchell is unavailable, the spotlight could shift to rookie Mac McWilliams, the fifth-round pick who’s yet to play a defensive snap this season. Despite his inexperience, coaches have praised his quickness and instincts in practice.

Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio acknowledged the challenge:

“We’ve been moving him between nickel and corner — he’s been learning both. We’ll see if he’s ready when the moment comes.”

The Eagles might opt for Adoree’ Jackson and Kelee Ringo on the outside, with Cooper DeJean in the slot, or experiment by pushing DeJean outside and letting McWilliams or Parry Nickerson handle the nickel duties. Either way, Fangio must balance continuity, upside, and risk against one of the NFL’s most potent receiving groups.

At 4–2, the Eagles still lead the NFC East, but this week could define how the defense adapts under pressure — and whether Philadelphia chooses to protect its future or fight for the now.

Buffalo Bills Just Signed a Top-Remaining Free Agent CB to Save Their Secondary
The Buffalo Bills secondary has been pure chaos lately: Darius Slay refused to report, Ja’Marcus Ingram got poached by the Texans, and suddenly the depth chart looked thinner than ever. But GM Brandon Beane just pulled off a sneaky-smart move that flew completely under the radar… Late Tuesday afternoon, the Bills quietly signed one of the highest-rated cornerbacks still left on the open market to the practice squad — a 25-year-old former seventh-round pick with elite 4.45 speed and perfect slot-corner size (5’11”, 190 lbs). So… who is this mystery reinforcement? (Keep scrolling, we’ll reveal the name in a second) His 2025 journey has been a wild rollercoaster: Cut for good by the Las Vegas Raiders in April after bouncing on/off their practice squad all of 2024 Signed by Carolina in the summer → waived/injured → landed on IR Joined Baltimore in early August → survived most of camp but got released on final cutdown day (Aug 26) And now he’s officially belongs to the Buffalo Bills. Drumroll… the newest member of Bills Mafia is M.J. Devonshire — a name that, believe it or not, was still ranked inside the Top 30 available cornerback free agents this fall according to PFF, Bleacher Report, and multiple NFL insiders. Right now Buffalo’s active 53-man roster only has THREE true outside cornerbacks: Christian Benford Tre’Davious White Rookie Maxwell Hairston With a brutal late-season schedule and injuries always one snap away, bringing in a young, fast, draft-pedigree CB who can play both outside and in the slot is a no-brainer depth move. Is M.J. Devonshire the hidden gem who finally stabilizes the Bills’ secondary… or just another practice-squad body? One thing’s for sure: Bills Mafia just got a little faster.
