Eagles’ Stunning Trade Could Shake Up Starting Lineup — Fan-Favorite’s Role in Jeopardy

The Philadelphia Eagles just shook up their secondary again. On Wednesday, the team acquired cornerback Michael Carter from the New York Jets, along with a 2027 seventh-round pick, in exchange for wide receiver John Metchie and a 2027 sixth-rounder.
While the trade may look minor at first glance, it could have major implications for the defense — particularly for fan-favorite cornerback Cooper DeJean. The move could allow the Eagles to slide DeJean from nickel to outside cornerback opposite rookie standout Quinyon Mitchell.
Although Carter has experience on the outside, most of his NFL snaps have come in the slot, which gives defensive coordinator Vic Fangio multiple options to adjust his lineup. Fangio admitted the staff had already discussed a potential position change for DeJean before the trade.
“We considered it,” Fangio said. “But when you have one of the better players at a key position, you hate to take him away from what he does best. It’s definitely something we’ve talked about.”
DeJean himself remains unfazed by the speculation.
“I’ll play wherever they put me,” DeJean told NBC Sports’ Dave Zangaro. “I’ve been lining up outside a bit more lately and feel more comfortable there. If they move me, I’ll be ready.”
With the Bye Week approaching, the Eagles now face a crucial decision that could define the shape of their defense for the rest of the season. One thing is clear — Philadelphia’s latest trade has everyone watching closely.
