Drew Brees stands up for the New Orleans Saints in the midst of the “Bountygate” tension between Russell Wilson and Sean Payton: “The Saints have nothing to apologize for — never underestimate the pride and heart of New Orleans.” ⚜️🔥🔥

As the verbal feud between Russell Wilson and Sean Payton continues to ripple through the NFL, one team that had nothing to do with it — the New Orleans Saints — has suddenly been dragged into the crossfire. And now, Saints legend Drew Brees has spoken up to defend the team’s name and legacy.

It all began after the Denver Broncos’ wild win over the New York Giants last weekend. When asked about the game, Broncos head coach Sean Payton took a not-so-subtle jab at his former quarterback, saying he “hoped his team would get to face Russell Wilson instead of rookie Jaxson Dart.”

Wilson didn’t stay quiet. Hours later, he fired back on X (Twitter) — and in doing so, he dragged the Saints into the drama, referencing the infamous “Bountygate” scandal from over 15 years ago, when Payton was still head coach in New Orleans:

“Classless… but not surprised… Didn’t realize you’re still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media. 😎😂 #LetsRide”

The post immediately infuriated Saints fans. For them, Bountygate is a painful but distant memory — one the franchise and its community have long moved past. Payton hasn’t coached the Saints since 2021, yet Wilson’s words effectively revived an old wound and disrespected the Saints organization in the process.

That’s when Drew Brees, the face of the franchise and one of the most respected voices in NFL history, decided to speak out.

“I spent my entire career with this team,” Brees said during an interview with WWL Radio. “The New Orleans Saints are not about petty rivalries or cheap shots. When two people who’ve represented this league publicly disrespect a team that had nothing to do with their issue — that’s disappointing, and frankly, disrespectful to our fans and our history.”

Brees, who alongside Payton brought New Orleans its first Super Bowl title in 2010, added:

“I respect Sean, and I respect Russell. But if they want to trade words, leave the Saints out of it. This organization has moved on, it’s evolved, and it stands for resilience and unity. We don’t deserve to be dragged into someone else’s fight.”

Sources inside the Saints’ locker room told reporters that head coach Kellen Moore and the current players were “grateful” for Brees’ words. One team member said:

“When Drew speaks, the whole city listens. He’s not just defending the team — he’s defending what New Orleans stands for.”

While both Payton and Wilson have remained silent since Brees’ remarks, fans across the league see his statement as a powerful reminder — that no matter the drama or the noise, the Saints’ legacy is built on pride, perseverance, and respect.

And as Brees concluded:

“You can say whatever you want about us. But don’t forget — the Saints always rise, even when we’re pulled into something we didn’t start.”
