🛑 Dallas Cooked the Jets’ Star All-Pro CB Like BBQ
New York Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner tried to deflect blame after getting beaten by Dallas Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens on a deep touchdown pass. With Gardner tightly covering him, Pickens hauled in a 43-yard strike from Dak Prescott in the end zone with 4:33 left in the third quarter, extending Dallas’ lead to 30-3 over New York. It was just one of several rough moments for Gardner and the Jets’ struggling defense in a 37-22 blowout loss to the Cowboys.
When speaking to reporters after the game, Gardner avoided taking full responsibility for the play, instead pointing to a “busted coverage.”
Gardner explained that his assignment for the entire game was to stay locked on Pickens. Up until that play, he had held Pickens to just one catch before, as he put it, “something happened with the other.” He appeared to suggest that safety help was expected, as Pickens got behind the defense while Gardner trailed closely before the catch, per Connor J. Hughes of SNY.
The 26-year-old corner out of Cincinnati has allowed 151 yards and one touchdown this season on a 55.6% completion rate in coverage. He’s still searching for his first interception of 2025.
Despite that, Gardner remains one of the few bright spots on a Jets defense that’s been short on positives. New York has fallen to 0-5 after the loss to Dallas and will face the Denver Broncos in London in Week 6 on October 12.
