Dak Prescott Shocks Fans With Major Update on His Retirement Plans at Age 32
Dak Prescott isn’t ready to slow down anytime soon.
The Dallas Cowboys quarterback, who’s been quietly carrying his team to a 2-2-1 start despite the defense ranking last in the league — giving up over 412 yards per game — has just opened up about a major shift in his retirement plans.
Prescott is currently in one of the most efficient stretches of his career. He’s completing passes at a personal-best 71.3%, throwing for ten touchdowns against only three interceptions — and his steady play has already placed him in the early MVP conversation.
But at 32, the Cowboys’ longest-tenured player is starting to think about the long game — literally.
Speaking to Cowboys insider Jon Machota, Prescott admitted that his view on retirement has evolved over the years.
“Forties would be a good number,” Prescott said. “I’ve been through some injuries, played really physical in college… so if I can get to 40 playing at the standard I expect from myself, yeah, that’d be awesome.”
Originally, Prescott didn’t expect to play deep into his late thirties. But the way he feels now — both physically and mentally — has changed that outlook.
“It’s definitely changed,” he continued. “I can see it more realistically now. The fun, the peace this game still gives me, even 10 years in — that’s something you can’t replace. So as long as I can perform at a level I’m proud of, I’ll keep doing it.”
Prescott has been the face of the franchise since being drafted in the fourth round back in 2016 — a season that saw him win NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. Since then, he’s made three Pro Bowl appearances, most recently in 2023.
Now, with longtime veterans Zack Martin retiring and DeMarcus Lawrence leaving in free agency, Prescott stands as the Cowboys’ longest-serving cornerstone.
And with the way he’s playing this season, it’s hard to imagine Cowboys Nation wanting him to hang up his cleats anytime soon.
The Cowboys still have work to do if they hope to reach the postseason, but with Prescott’s renewed drive and leadership, they’ll take on the Carolina Panthers next — with their QB firmly focused on the long haul.
