Commanders DC Reveals What Makes Dak Prescott Nearly Unstoppable
As the Washington Commanders prepare to face the Dallas Cowboys, one man on the Washington sideline knows exactly what’s coming — and who’s leading it.
Defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr., who spent three seasons in Dallas, understands Dak Prescott better than most. Ahead of Sunday’s matchup, Whitt praised his former quarterback while delivering a clear message to his defense: if you want to beat the Cowboys, you have to hit Dak Prescott.

“Dak’s Having a Great Year — Everybody Sees It”
“Dak has always played well,” Whitt said Friday. “What I see now is him getting the ball out of his hands really quickly. He plays with great anticipation — when that back foot hits the ground, the ball’s gone.
He can move in the pocket, make every throw, and honestly, he’s faster and stronger than people give him credit for.”
Whitt didn’t stop there:
“He’s having a great year. Everybody sees it. I think we’ve pressured quarterbacks well, but with Dak, you’ve got to hit him. I always judge a quarterback by how they react once they’ve been hit — and Dak doesn’t flinch. He keeps his eyes downfield. That’s what real quarterbacks do.”
“We Have to Make Him Uncomfortable”
Whitt knows Prescott’s toughness isn’t just physical — it’s mental.
“You can hit him, but he’s a very tough man,” Whitt said. “We have to make sure he’s uncomfortable in the pocket. Because if he’s sitting back there, hitting his back foot and getting the ball out to his eligibles, he’s really, really good.”
“He’ll Carve You Up If You Don’t Disguise Your Coverages”
The Commanders’ DC also emphasized Prescott’s improved field vision and pre-snap awareness.
“He understands coverages. If your pre-snap look matches what you do post-snap, he’s going to carve you up,” Whitt warned. “We have to mix it up, disguise, and make sure we’re tight on the bodies of those receivers.”
Dak Prescott: Locked In and Leading
Under head coach Mike McCarthy, Prescott is quietly playing some of the sharpest football of his career. His decision-making is quicker, his reads are cleaner, and his pocket presence has become elite.
The Cowboys’ offense is running on rhythm and precision — and Whitt Jr. knows that better than anyone.
Bottom Line
Washington knows the assignment: make Prescott uncomfortable, or risk getting picked apart.
But given the way Dak is seeing the field and getting the ball out with confidence and timing, that’s far easier said than done.
“You let him get comfortable,” Whitt said, “he’ll tear you apart.”
