Chris Jones Agrees to Restructure Deal, Boosts Kansas City Chiefs’ Salary Cap with Base Salary Cut

Kansas City, MO – May 14, 2025

The Kansas City Chiefs have gained crucial cap flexibility as defensive tackle Chris Jones agreed to restructure his contract, converting a portion of his base salary into a signing bonus, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on May 13, 2025. The move strengthens Kansas City’s financial position as they aim for a third consecutive Super Bowl title.

Jones, in the second year of a five-year, $158.75 million extension, reduced his 2025 base salary from $25.25 million to $22.25 million. The $3 million difference was converted into a signing bonus, spread over three years, lowering his cap hit from $28.29 million to $26.29 million.

“I’m fully committed to this team’s mission,” Jones told The Kansas City Star’s Sam McDowell. “I want to help us keep winning championships.”

The restructure adds $2 million to the Chiefs’ $15.4 million cap space, bringing it to $17.4 million. With ongoing contract negotiations for running back Isiah Pacheco, general manager Brett Veach now has room to pursue a veteran cornerback like Jonathan Jones or a wide receiver to bolster the roster.

Jones, a cornerstone of Kansas City’s defense at 30, remains an elite run-stopper and pass-rusher. In 2024, he recorded 36 tackles, 6.5 sacks, and 10 quarterback hits across 17 games, earning a 90.1 PFF grade. His sacrifice ensures he stays with a contender chasing history with a third straight Super Bowl.

The Chiefs, powered by Patrick Mahomes4,542-yard MVP-caliber season and James Cook’s 1,086-yard rushing campaign, need financial flexibility to address roster gaps. The extra cap space could help sign a veteran to strengthen a secondary ranked 20th in coverage or add a playmaker to complement Xavier Worthy and Jalen Royals.

“Chris is the ultimate team player,” said NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. “This move underscores his dedication to the Chiefs’ dynasty.”

With a challenging 2025 schedule featuring road games against the Eagles and Ravens, the Chiefs view Jones’s restructure as a pivotal step toward building a championship roster. His leadership and disruptive presence on the defensive line could be the key to their quest for a historic three-peat.
