Chiefs Player Avoids NFL Penalty After Controversial Lions Game
The Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions’ October 12 clash may be over on the scoreboard, but not in the headlines. In the 30-17 victory at Arrowhead Stadium, chaos erupted when Lions defender Brian Branch appeared to brush off Patrick Mahomes and make contact with JuJu Smith-Schuster after the game — a moment that quickly went viral.
But the real controversy came on October 18, when the NFL announced its Week 6 fines: Lions players Alex Anzalone and Tyler Lacy were fined $12,172 and $5,722 respectively for “unnecessary roughness,” while Branch received a one-game suspension. Meanwhile, no Chiefs player — including JuJu — was punished.
The Lions have the right to appeal, though their chances seem slim. According to NFL policy, if the appeal fails, the fine is deducted from the player’s next paycheck. All collected fines will go to the Professional Athletes Foundation and the NFL Foundation to support player safety and welfare.
As Detroit fumes over the league’s decision, Kansas City moves on, preparing for their next matchup against the Raiders at Arrowhead — clean, confident, and focused on another win.
