Buccaneers HC Todd Bowles Challenges Eagles’ “Tush Push,” Claims to Have Found a Counter

The Philadelphia Eagles’ infamous “tush push” has dominated headlines across the NFL, and it’s about to take center stage again in Week 4 as they face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The play, where quarterback Jalen Hurts gets shoved forward by multiple offensive teammates to convert short-yardage situations, has been one of the most unstoppable weapons in football.
Defenses across the league have struggled to contain it, and some have even called for it to be banned. But Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles isn’t backing down from the challenge. Instead, he insists Tampa Bay has a plan to counter the Eagles’ go-to move: "The Eagles think their ‘tush push’ is unstoppable, but they haven’t run it against us yet. Our defense isn’t backing down – we’ll be the ones to put it to the test and show them it’s not invincible."
Bowles acknowledged that defending the play is a team effort, requiring strength, timing, and discipline: “You just have to execute it. You’ve got to line up, it’s got to be a group effort, and you’ve got to get off the ball at the right time. You’ve got to be stronger and better — and that still doesn’t guarantee you anything.”
Still, Bowles views the challenge as a creative test for his coaching staff and players. During the offseason, the league even debated whether or not to outlaw the “tush push,” but Bowles stood firm on its legitimacy. “It’s a good play. It’s a creative play for them, and we’ve got to get better as defensive coaches trying to be creative to stop it,” he said.
For Tampa Bay, stopping the Eagles’ signature short-yardage weapon could be pivotal. Converting third and fourth downs with ease has allowed Philadelphia to sustain drives and control momentum, leaving opponents frustrated. If Bowles and his defense can even slightly disrupt the “tush push,” it may tilt the balance in what’s expected to be one of Week 4’s most physical matchups.
